A Window to Heritage by Roma Patel

"A Window to Heritage” the title itself gives us the glimpse of the cultural legacy that we uphold. At the recent show of Times Artiest 2020 curated by Priya Adhyaru Majithia, Roma Patel created and visually narrated this magnificent artwork taking us back to our roots. Her work was displayed on the long black brick wall outside the entrance. The display looked extremely interesting as if it being the entrance door where one would stop, light a diya and then step in.
Honourable chief minister Shri Vijay Rupani followed the ritual of lighting the diya and inaugurated the show
Talking about her artwork, She has meticulously picked up every piece of carved old wood from different places and created this big window with a gokhlo in the centre. In our Hindu culture at every good occasion a diya is lit invoking the blessing of the divine. Gokhlo is a place where diya is lit every morning and evening. It is a beautiful ritual of praying and embracing the prosperity and well-being of all. Roma has made every effort to give it a feel of heritage. Her aesthetic sense reflects the way she has arranged every piece of wood. Our very own amdavad was once known as the walled city had had many gates which still stand high in its own spirit making us feel indebted. The story is such that goddess lakshmi had blessed the city and was very much evident in the way the people and businesses flourished, once she decided to leave the city and as she was stepping out the chokidar of one of the gates urged her to wait till he returned back. He knew if she left the wealth of our city would collapse, he sacrificed his life and never returned forcing Goddess Lakshmi to keep her promise and never leave the City and thus from then amdavad never looked back and kept growing and flourishing not only with wealth but in unity peace and prosperity. There was no religious bias and people lived peacefully. At the entrance of the Teen Darwaja there is one such gokhlo where till date a diya is lit daily by a Muslim family. Isn’t it amazing? Even after 600 years we have still maintained that ritual. The true spirit of Vasudhev Kutumbakam. Let's preserve, nurture and embrace the rich culture with pride and light this diya of hope compassion, love and unity.

It is a continous urge within which keeps on going that enables an artist to keep on exploring and experimenting with forms, ideas ,materials and much more. It is a language of expressing ones own views through any form of art .   This completely signifies the thought process of Ronak Sopariwala, a visual artist from Ahmedabad. Ronak strongly believes that art is created by an artist and also killed by an artist. Though this seems to be a contradicting statement but it surly emphasis on the process by which any artist works, at times facing conflicts between being creative or being professional or for that matter finding a way out in between, as this ultimately depends on an indiviadua
